Jaap van der Vliet

Jaap van der Vliet (1969) studied at the conservatory in his birthplace, Hilversum. He completed his education at the Utrecht Conservatory with Peter Hoekmeijer, and attended master classes with Peter Damm (Dresden) and Bedrich Tylsár.

When he was still at the conservatory he played with the Radio Philharmonic. Immediately upon completion of his studies in 1993 he became a member of that orchestra.
Since 1996 he has been a member of the horn group of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.
His successful audition for the RCO was filmed as part of the distinctive and contemporary documentary “A Royal Company”, put together by the AVRO.

Jaap is an active chamber music player at home and abroad. He performs regularly with well-known modern music groups such as the Asko Ensemble, Schönberg Ensemble, Ives Ensemble and the Nieuw Ensemble. With members of the RCO he performs with the Ebony Band, Viotta Ensembel and the RCO Brass. He has participated in the Concertgebouw series ‘Orchestra members perform for the “friends of the RCO”’. In 1997 he performed with the RCO Brass for the ‘friends of the RCO’ in New York, Washington and Chicago.
As a member of the Reicha Quintet, an association that lasted 10 years, he has made a number of recordings.

With the Residentie Orchestra he performed as a soloist in Robert Schumann’s Koncertstück for four horns in the Hague and Leverkusen.

Jaap is horn professor at the Utrecht Conservatory where he also coaches chamber music ensembles.
